I'm sure this has been asked, but I figured I'd start a fresh thread.  How many of you teachers out there use a social netwrok for teachers.   This, of course, I mean as opposed to "tresspassing" on the networks of your students - such as Facebook or MySpace.

I don't currently use one but i figure, since so many students do, it would be worth taking advantage of a network for teachers.  The way I see it, it's like a free teacher website.

Any thoughts... successes... failures in this area?

In Portugal, schools have adopted the freeware platform Moodle and I also use it as an administrator of a teachers community and as a student of a master degree.

I think that these tools are very useful and easy. Once you get used to them you can see a lot of advantages.

We use both Moodle and Ning.com in our district. We are also looking into the new Google APPs feature that allows you to password protect groups who join your particular apps.

It would very interesting to know why students' social networks succeed. If we knew it, we would be able to take advantage in having a teachers' social network.
I may say that most teachers do not care about challenges. The ones who care are in this kind of networks, but we are isolated, in a way.

CU Around ;)
